Terms of Use

There is no single copyright policy that applies to all the materials provided by the Corpus Scriptorum Latinorum and its parent site, Forum Romanum. While the vast majority of the texts appearing within these pages have been entered from editions that are now in the Public Domain, we also host a number of texts that have been personally contributed by their editors and translators, who still retain the rights to their work. These contributors are free to use their work elsewhere in any manner they wish, but all submissions to the CSL and Forum Romanum are made with the agreement that they may not be withdrawn at a later time. And as their work is protected by copyright, these materials are governed by U.S. Fair Use policies, as outlined in Section 107 of the Copyright Act of 1976:

[T]he fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified in that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright.

Any modification, remote loading, publication, reproduction on another site, diffusion on the internet, or commercial use of these texts is strictly prohibited without the prior agreement of the author.

Those texts that have been entered from Public Domain editions, however, may be freely copied and distributed for private and educational use, provided that the original source is clearly cited on any copies that are made. Any commercial use of these texts, including print-publication and inclusion in subscription-based archives, is prohibited.

Of course, all texts that are linked through the Corpus Scriptorum Latinorum but do not reside on its server are governed by the policies of their particular hosts, and neither the CSL nor Forum Romanum claim any ownership over these texts. If you are in doubt over the copyright status of a particular text, please contact us for more information.
